Tool # 11 1. In reflecting, I did enjoy several new ideas. First, www.makebeliefcomix.com is a fun and easy tool for students. I can easily envision the students creating simple comic strips to show understanding of a topic. Google docs has been the most used by me so far. I have had my students brainstorm simultaneously on topics, and, I have shared several documents with other teachers for homework hall, tutorials, and generally keeping up with students needs. 2. My thinking has transformed in that I really need to push myself to utilize more technology. I do not have to know 'how' to do it all, as my students can often help me out as well as my teaching partners! I have enough hardware to complete the mission, I just need to amp up my risk taking to accommodate the 21st Century learner. 3. There were actually no unexpected outcomes. I knew I would learn something, and I did! Lots of 'somethings'.
Tool #7 While skipped previously, I have come back to #7. The project will focus on population trends, content from both social studies and math. We will use the data from Social Studies to plot and graph population growth for various countries around the world. We will use the graphing calculators to create a linear regression to predict population data in the future. Google docs will be utilized for students to record information both during math class and during social studies class. While a trend line might successfully predict future populations, students will discuss social and cultural reasons which might change the path of the trend line.
Tool # 10 1) Things that students should understand about being good digital citizens is to take advantage of the incredible tool available to them. The need to explore the web as well as contribute towards appropriate and useful content. I want them to understand that their contributions can improve and encourage discussions, and can also hurt and cause damage. They have the opportunity to contribute to web projects all over the world. 2) I would like to further explore Atomic Learning's Creative Commons workshop on licensing creative work. This might encourage students to create web work knowing it could be licensed. 3) One way to teach digital citizenship is to compare similarites and differences of how students learned 20 years ago compared to now. All the technology tools available today allow us to access an incredible amount of information in little time. I also want to compare and contrast the effects of contributing appropriate content that helps vs. the ramifications of contributing hurtful, inappropriate content. 4) In watching my students utilize web resources for learning, parents will ultimately be drawn in to the technology. Through my teacher website and use of technology in my projects the parents will see the usefulness of the web.
Tool 9 4. A couple fun Apps include Math in Motion as well as the Interactive White Board app. Math in Motion adds the extra 'fun' of tilting the device to 'roll' to the correct answer. The Interactive White Board app allows students to "write" on the whiteboard from anywhere around the room similar to an e-slate. 5. Another use as a station would be to have students search and investigate for apps that they would want on the device.
Starting again.....After completing most of the 11 Tools, 'Grand Central' decided to change my email, thus losing my google account and my previous blog. Therefore, I have created a new blog to continue the Tools. To keep myself informed, I completed halfway through Tool 9, still need to address 4. and 5. before moving onto Tool 10. On the plus side, I like my new blog name: OBrienalgebrains.
